In Sickness & In Health - Eating at Indulgent Indian Weddings

Wedding season in India is a time of joy, celebration, and of course, delicious food. Buffets and elaborate meals are a central part of these festivities, but they can also present a challenge for those trying to maintain a balanced diet and avoid food wastage. Navigating the abundance of food at weddings while staying true to your nutritional and health goals requires a thoughtful approach. Here are some practical tips to help you enjoy the food, minimize waste, and stay within your dietary requirements.

  1. Plan Ahead: Before attending a wedding or reception, consider the timing of the event and plan your meals accordingly. If you know there will be a lavish dinner, opt for lighter meals earlier in the day to balance your overall calorie intake. But do not skip meals.

  2. Mindful Eating: When you approach the buffet, take a moment to survey the spread before piling up your plate. Choose a variety of dishes, including salads, grilled or steamed options, and smaller portions of richer items. This way, you can sample everything without overindulging.

  3. Portion Control: It's easy to get carried away with the variety of dishes available, but practicing portion control is key. Start with smaller portions, and if you find something particularly delightful. This approach not only helps in preventing overeating but also reduces food wastage. Use a tablespoon to serve yourself a spoonful of each food. That way you can taste all the foods on offer.

  4. Hydration: Stay hydrated throughout the event by drinking water. This can help you feel fuller, reducing the temptation to overeat. Remember the sugary drinks on offer will add to the end result, so consider avoiding them altogether.

  5. Choose Wisely: Indian weddings often feature a wide array of traditional dishes, many of which are rich and indulgent. While it's okay to enjoy these treats in moderation, try to prioritize healthier options like grilled meats, vegetable dishes, and fresh fruits.

  6. Indulge the Sweets: Indian weddings are famous for their elaborate sweet offerings. Sampling small portions of every dessert in sight is one way to indulge, or you can pick one or two sweets that truly appeal to you. Savor them slowly and mindfully to fully appreciate the flavours.

  7. Be Mindful of Alcohol: If you choose to drink alcohol, do so in moderation. Alcoholic beverages can be high in calories and may lead to overeating, so it's important to be mindful of your consumption.

  8. Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to your body's signals of hunger and fullness. Eat slowly and savour each bite, allowing yourself to stop when you feel satisfied, even if there's still food on your plate.

  9. Stay Active: If possible engage in pre-wedding/event physical activity for just 30  mins. This will kick in the endorphins making you happier to face the event. At the wedding event, walk around, meet people, enjoy dancing.  This will help in burning off the calories. After indulging in a wedding feast, consider taking a leisurely walk or engaging in some light physical activity. This can aid digestion and help offset any excess calorie intake.

By approaching wedding or event buffets with mindfulness and moderation, you can savor the delicious offerings while respecting your nutritional and health needs. Additionally, being mindful of food wastage not only benefits your own well-being but also contributes to a more sustainable and responsible celebration. Enjoy the festivities, savour the flavours, and celebrate in a way that aligns with your personal health goals.
